A Feat of Herculean Proportions
The snowy mountains hydro-electric scheme silver commemorative coin

At a cost of £422 million, The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme was one of the most complex engineering projects in the world. Between 1949 and 1974 the mainly immigrant workforce built seven power stations, 16 dams, 80 kilometres of aqueducts, 145 kilometres of tunnels as well as 1,600 kilometres of roads and train tracks. More than 100 temporary camps and seven townships were built to house the 100,000 men and women workers. Amazingly, only two per cent of the scheme’s works are visible above ground. The Bradford Mint is proud to commemorate this symbol of Australian ingenuity, sacrifice and mate-ship with this impressively sized, pure silver commemorative.

About this coin
The Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme of 1949-1974 represents Australian ingenuity, ambition, inclusion and mate-ship at its best. This massive pioneering project saw tens of thousands of post-war immigrants from over thirty nations make up around two thirds of its workforce. Many were refugees from war-torn Europe - some of them former enemies - who united to provide essential skills and manpower, contributing significantly to the country which had become their home. In total, over 100,000 men and women worked on the project, housed throughout seven nearby towns. New schools were set up to educate the children, benefitting both them and Australia in the years to come. The importance of the Snowy Mountains project to Australia’s self-worth as a nation and the unity of its citizens, especially after the rigours and sacrifices of the war years, was important in a nationalistic sense too. As Australia’s greatest building achievement, it changed Australia and its people forever. The Bradford Mint is proud to present this exclusive 65mm, 999 pure silver commemorative, which has been meticulously crafted to the highest standards as a tribute to those who contributed to its creation. Its central motif shows a worker standing in front of one of the immense tunnels being built, surrounded by others engaged in their specialised tasks. Fitting honour indeed to the many who combined their skills to make the dream of Snowy Mountain Hydro-Electric Scheme come true.
